Backups of your data
What we back up, how long backups are kept and where your data is stored.
We back up your data automatically. This page explains what is covered, for how long, and where the data is stored.
What is backed up
- Website files — everything in the folder of your website, including files uploaded by your users.
- Databases.
- E-mail.
Backups are made daily.
How long backups are kept
Backups are available for 14 days. Separate disaster-recovery copies are kept for up to 31 days and are used only to recover from a serious failure of a data center.
Restoring from a backup
- Databases: open Backups for the database in the Control Panel to create your own backup, download it or restore it. See Back up an MSSQL database and Restore an MSSQL database.
- Website files and other data: open a support ticket and tell us what you need restored and from which day.
Tip
Before a risky change — a big deployment or a database migration — create your own database backup first. It takes a moment and you can restore it yourself.
Keep your own copy
Automatic backups protect you from a failure on our side and from recent mistakes. For anything important, keep your own copies as well: your source code in a Git repository and a regular download of the database backup.
Where your data is stored
- Services in the EU run in data centers in Germany. Disaster-recovery copies are stored in a separate data center in Finland.
- Data is hosted in the USA only if you choose a US data center for your service yourself.
Details about data processing are in our Data Processing Agreement, which is part of the Terms of Service.
Files outside wwwroot
Each website runs under its own identity and can access only its own folder, so other customers cannot read your files. Folders of your website outside wwwroot are not reachable over HTTP, which makes them a good place for private files. They are part of the website backup too.
